Hello friends - so as you may know, our kitty Callie is in a very sad predicament right now. We took her to the emergency room last night and found out that her tiny kitty kidneys are in the process of failing. She was on the brink of the end last night and I think we made it just in time. Unfortunately, we spent every single dime we had on x-rays, IVs, blood tests, and keeping her over night so that they could flush her system since they think she might have gotten into something toxic. She needs to be in the hospital for 3 more days in order to recover but we’re just.. broke. We’re in dire straits - we move out of the state in a week and now we don’t know what we’re going to do. We’ve turned to everyone we can think of without any help and now we’re coming here as a last resort. Please help us save our kitty.

Transgender People--Banned From Boarding Airplanes in Canada.

The shit hit the fan in the trans blogosphere last night, when it came to light that there is a disturbing new section in the Identity Screening Regulations used in airports throughout Canada. Simply put, Transgender People are Completely Banned From Boarding Airplanes in Canada.

The offending section of the regulations reads:

5.2 (1) An air carrier shall not transport a passenger if …
(c) the passenger does not appear to be of the gender indicated on the identification he or she presents;

Although this obviously discriminatory smear of regulation did not come to significant public attention until very recently, it apparently came into effect on July 27th, 2011.

It is important to note that these regulations are not actually a piece of legislation, which would have had to pass through readings and votes in the House and Senate (which is probably why it went unnoticed until now). Rather, the Identity Screening Regulations are a set of rules implemented unilaterally by the Ministry of Transportation, as part of Canada’s so-called Passenger Protect, which is essentially the Canadian Federal Government’s equivalent to the U.S.’s “no-fly” list.

Minister of Transportation Denis Lebel is, of course, a federal Conservative MP appointed to the cabinet position by Stephen Harper.

So what does this mean? Well, in order to change the ‘sex’ designation on a Canadian Passport, the federal government requires proof that surgery has taken place, or will take place within one year. So for non-operative transgender persons, for gender nonconforming (genderqueer) persons, and for the vast majority of pre-operative transsexual persons, it is literally impossible to obtain proper travel documentation marked with the sex designation which “matches” the gender identity in which they live.

In the eyes of the honourable Minister of Transportation, that makes trans people unfit to fly in Canada.

Alright… Let’s turn this into a big fucking deal. Pass this around.

Nova Scotia Mental Health Care Project

Hey - my friend and I are planning to send a critical letter about the state of Mental Health Care in our province to the Premier and we need some help making sure that it makes an impact! Nova Scotia’s Mental Health care institution is far from comprehensive, let alone competent, with very few beds, resources and sparse coverage even for those with private health plans. Many of us who have been in and out of the system have had less than inspiring experiences coupled with a distressing lack of outpatient support or follow-up care.

We are looking for other Nova Scotians to talk about their experiences within the system in order to present the Premier with a broader and more accurate picture of what actually goes on when mentally ill people attempt to get treatment in this province.

While the focus of this project is on the short fallings of the system and negative experiences, if your experiences have been positive there is room for your voice as well! If you were treated well, feel free to send us a paragraph or two about what you think worked.

As fast as I can. I’ve got some friends in another state I can shack up with for the time being until I can get my footing, but I need some money to get me started. I’m trying to sell instruments, I’m trying to sell video games, I’m selling some prized possessions. I can’t get a job. I can’t get disability.

What I need is passage out, with no aid of my family. I need to sneak out during a time when my mum isn’t around, and I’m hoping to either a) take a Greyhound away, which will be a day’s trip, or b) take a plane to there instead. Either way, I’m going to need fare, probably a bit of extra money for my bags (beyond the usual allotted bags. I’m trying to pack as light as I can, but it’s looking like it’s going to be three bags and a carry-on right now.

Any and all money is going to be fucking phenomenal. I know I ask this of you guys a lot, but this situation is… getting dangerous. I wouldn’t be asking again if I didn’t really, really need people’s help.

I know I don’t know many people on tumblr, but I’d still like to get the word out. An Edmonton radio station, the Bear, has started a contest called “Win A Wife,” in conjunction with an American mail-order-bride company. I don’t think I need to explain the myriad of ways in which this is wrong, sexist, and entirely disgusting and exploitative, but I would like to ask one thing.
