flamboyantlydave replied to your post: i have an hour to write this speech someone help…
what’s it on? i’m pretty good at speeches, but depends on what it’s on…it’s about why the us had no business getting involved in any of the wars it was involved in post-wwii pretty much
Oh, if you still need help there are a few really big points you can touch on! Just address the changes that Truman made to Homeland Security in the years following WWII and how the changes were designed to keep the war economy going and that the ideological bent of it was actually very slyly manufactured. This is what drove the US into Korea, where it had no business being. You can talk about how other presidents were either reluctant or had a hard time stemming the momentum and use Eisenhower’s prescient speech about the Military-Industrial Complex. It’d be useful to talk about how having a standing military was essentially anathema to American rhetoric in the pre-war years and all the resistance to involvement in WWs I+II in the first place. I mean, it’s a blatant fact that the Gulf of Tonkin incident was faked/manipulated so that LBJ could escalate in Vietnam because until very recently, it was difficult to get US citizens to rally behind public wars (the US has fought a lot of wars very quietly).
I think that exploring the root of America’s “world policing” from Truman to LBJ is probably your easiest course here. The Cold War was a big part of it, but it was also about money. Now it’s bankrupting the country (I mean, that’s a simplistic bent on the whole thing, but this is a high school speech).
I hope that helps!
